Unroadworthy vehicles flagged─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 15:20 Thu, 17 Dec 2020

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) warns that traffic law enforcement officers will be intensifying their campaign to remove unsafe vehicles from the roads ahead of the peak festive season travel.
Spokesperson, Simon Zwane, says more than 1 800 vehicles countrywide have been removed from the roads after it was discovered that they were being operated on public roads while they had major defects that placed the lives of other road users at risk.
Zwane says over 1 400 public transport vehicles have also been impounded for operating without permits and overloading of passengers. Zwane says no stone will be left unturned in efforts to ensure road safety this festive season.
His statement comes less than a week after the Road Traffic Management Cooperation's Mpho Mokhantso addressed Emergency Services’ personnel who gathered at the Shell Ultra City Pitstop in Bloemfontein for a road safety awareness campaign.
Mokhantso reiterated that road safety is everybody's responsibility, stating that more than 14 000 people die on SA roads every single year.
Meanwhile, the Free State provincial Road, Police and Transport MEC, Sam Mashinini has also warned against traffic law transgression and declared the provinces state of readiness for this festive season.
“The Road Traffic Management Corporation has purchased 19 mobile vehicle testing stations and distributed in different provinces to assist in identify vehicles that are unfit to be operated on public roads. The RTMC reiterates its call to motorists to fix their vehicles before embarking on their journeys and avoid overloading to reduce number of people dying in road crashes” said Zwane.
