Cape Town police are investigating the death of a hiker who fell while hiking in Table Mountain National Park.

He reportedly fell from one of the trails on Lion’s Head trails in the early hours of Thursday (18/12) morning. Emergency services were alerted shortly after the fall, prompting an immediate and coordinated rescue response.

The matter has been handed over to the police for the necessary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

SanParks spokesperson JP Louw confirmed the incident, saying the hiker was declared deceased on the scene. “Out of respect to the family, SanParks will not provide further details of the deceased.”

He conveyed the authority’s condolences and expressed gratitude to all those who assisted during the response. “We thank the following agencies who responded to the incident: Wilderness Search and Rescue, SanParks rangers and aerial support team, SkyMed technical rescue team, civilians, hikers and witnesses who provided statements, the police service, for their swift and professional assistance.”

Lion’s Head is a popular hiking destination within Table Mountain National Park, attracting both local and international visitors. Authorities have once again urged hikers to take extra precautions.
