As South Africa prepares for the academic year, the government has signalled a renewed commitment to stabilising and reforming the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

The scheme has approved funding for 626,935 first-time applicants, while 427,144 continuing university students have successfully met the criteria to continue receiving financial support. Nearly 900,000 students have applied for funding for the academic year.

Speaking during a media briefing on Thursday (22/01), higher education and training minister Buti Manamela reaffirmed NSFAS remains the backbone of support for students from poor and working-class households. However, he acknowledged that ongoing challenges in the basic education system, coupled with broader economic pressures, continue to strain the current funding model.

“The government has implemented short-term stabilisation measures, while work is underway to introduce a more sustainable funding reform in the medium term,” said Manamela.

“During the 2025/26 funding cycle, Setas are supporting more than 15,000 new bursary beneficiaries and nearly 8,000 continuing students, with a combined investment valued at close to R2 billion.” This diversification of funding sources reduces over-reliance on NSFAS and strengthens system resilience, he said.

During a media briefing on Tuesday, 6 January, it was revealed that 66% of applicants are female, reflecting the ongoing trend of strong female participation in tertiary education. Male applicants accounted for more than 30% of applications.

The scheme said it would issue an upfront payment on Sunday (1/2), covering the full book allowance, one month of meals, accommodation, personal care, and travel allowances. “This year, private accommodation allowances will be paid directly to accredited providers, who must enter agreements with students,” said NSFAS interim board chairperson Dr Mugwena Maluleke.

“This will guarantee prompt payment to providers, thereby encouraging their continued participation in the scheme. The upgraded system will generate monthly occupancy and payment reports directly from the central platform.”

Students are urged to rely on the official department of higher education and training, NSFAS, and institutional platforms for accurate information. And are warned to beware of illegally operating private colleges and colleges that offer unaccredited courses.
