Bloemfontein - Kevin Anderson has been knocked out of the BNP Paribas Open played at Indian Wells in California.

The South African number only qualified for the quarter-finals for the first time when he beat Gilles Simon of France 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

Anderson faced the number 6 seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the quarter-final earlier.

The big serving Czech was just too much for the South African. It was a hard fought battle, in the end Berdych triumphed in straights sets 6-4, 6-4.

In the ladies tennis, defending women's champion Victoria Azarenka withdrew from the tournament before her quarterfinal against Caroline Wozniacki because of a right ankle injury.
