The world leading men’s singles tennis player, Novak Djokovic, beat Scotland’s Andy Murray to win the French Open title for the first time in his career.

The now 12-time Grand Slam champion needed just over three hours to oust Murray to become just the third player to hold all four of tennis major titles at the same time.

Murray won the first set on the Phillipe Cartier court at the Roland Garros in Paris, however, the Serbian number one rebounded to make relative light work of denying the Scot his third Grand Slam title.

Djokovic won the clay-court title with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4 victory.

Djokovic says for him everything felt different at the slam and he feels it helps to win the illusive title.

“I felt like this year when I arrived that it's really different from any other year. The relationship and connection I had with fans, and everyone from security to ball boys, was just different.

“I don't want to sound arrogant but I really think everything is achievable in life,” responded Djokovic, when asked about the prospect of emulating Laver’s 1962 and 1969 achievements.

“I felt today something that I never felt before at Roland Garros. I felt the love of the crowd. My heart will always be with you on this court.

“Whether or not I can reach a calendar slam, that's still a possibility. But I don't think about it right now. Right now, I’m just trying to enjoy this experience of winning the trophy that I never won before.”

Meanwhile, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza won the woman’s title on Saturday when she defeated the USA’s Serena Williams 7-5 and 6-4.

The next Grand Slam will be Wimbledon which gets under way on 27 June in London.
