Touchdown - 2022 Two Oceans Marathon─── 17:00 Thu, 21 Apr 2022
This week on the Touchdown, Aaron Masemola is joined by Paralympian Louzanne Coetzee and 50km World Record holder Irvette van Zyl after their phenomenal performances at the recent Two Oceans Marathon.
Paralympian Louzanne Coetzee, who became the first blind driver of the sub two hour bus during the half marathon on Saturday, told us about her experience.
“It was an absolutely amazing experience and such a privilege to be the driver of the sub two hour bus. It was also a great opportunity to give back to the running community and to help fellow runners achieve their dreams,” said Coetzee.
The 50km World Record holder Irvette van Zyl, who finished second behind Gerda Steyn in the ultra marathon, shared her race plan going into Sunday's race.
“My plan was to run a sub three hours and thirty minutes. That was my plan A, but hearing that I also broke the course record was an extra bonus for me and being second in the race shows how strong the competition was on the day,” said Van Zyl.
Van Zyl also explained how exciting it is to see so many ladies performing so well in the sport of road running.
“It is really an exciting time for road running in the country. I also think Gerda Steyn has been vital to the sport because she showed us that you can definitely do it all when it comes to road running - from a 10km to ultra marathons, it's all possible,” added Van Zyl.
The next exciting ultra marathon on the calendar is the Comrades Marathon that will be taking place on Sunday 28 August. To all the athletes across Central South Africa who are currently training for the Comrades Marathon, we wish you all the best.
