When you think of uncommon jobs, you may think of an astronaut or something completely obscure. But have you ever heard of a perfumer?
In an article on mirror, we found out that According to a study by Ranker.com on the world’s rarest jobs, there are currently only3,330 people working as gaming managers in casinos, 1,430 astronomers, and 960locomotive firers but less than 500 perfumers. Huib, who is originally from the Netherlands but moved to the UK in 1996 and now lives in the village of Englefield Green, fell into the rare profession by chance.
His father worked for Coca-Cola and every week would bring home a new product for him and his siblings to try.
While his mother, a keen chef, was often experimenting in the kitchen with different flavours, including using lavender in baking. The 56-year-old was exposed to a wealth of ingredients and flavours as a child, which he believes formed the basis of his incredible sense of smell.

He then saw an advert in his local newspaper for a job as a perfumer and was then hired by Firmenich - one of the top three perfumery houses.
But perfumers don’t have better noses than the rest of us, Huib clarifies.
“It’s not related to sensitivity - the sensitivity of the nose is similar in most people,” he says.
“It’s actually about memory - perfumers memorise the smell of thousands of ingredients, accords and perfumes. Read more on this story here.
