• 2004: South African President Thabo Mbeki was to arrive today in Abidjan to help with peace negotiations, but the visit was postponed while he consults with other African leaders, urging for calm in the meantime.

• 2004: Famous South African playwright Gibson Kente (72), who told the world he had HIV/Aids in early 2003, dies.
• 1967: Sharleen Spiteri Scottish singer and songwriter (Texas) is born.
• 1979: Jon Peter Lewis, American singer is born.

• 1979: RSA golf team is expelled from Greece.
• 1942: Bicyclist Fausto Coppi establishes world record (45,848 km).
• 1989: Balt's Gregg Olson is 1st relief pitcher to win AL Rookie of Year.
• 1991: Magic Johnson announces he has HIV virus & retires from LA Lakers.
• 2004: Hendrik Ramaala, SA athlete, wins the men's title at the New York Marathon in an unofficial time of 2hr 9min 24sec, becoming the second SA to win the Marathon, after Willie Mtolo's triumph in 1992.
