What is new in Farmer’s Weekly?─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 06:22 Fri, 18 Oct 2019
In our Friday insert, only on Before Dawn, OFM News’ Christal-Lize Muller speaks to Denine Erasmus about what to expect in their latest edition of Farmer’s Weekly…
She focuses on the last issue of Farmer’s Weekly for the month of October with a news story about the decision that was made by the South Africa's Executive Council on Genetically Modified Organisms to deny and reject the application by Bayers to release a triple-stacked genetically modified (GM) maize in Southern Africa. One of the reasons given by the council for rejecting the release of the new technology, was that they felt the yield benefits associated with the specific maize event, was inconsistent.
Another news story focuses on a weather outlook moving into the summer season. Erasmus says farmers in many summer rainfall areas are already experiencing a late start to the rainfall season and it is starting to look as if they may run into some trouble with their plantings.
The magazine also has a news story about the outlook on ground nut plantings.
Erasmus also focuses on a story looking back at the recent Agri SA conference held in Pretoria. Lindiwe Sisulu, Minister of Human Settlement, Water and Sanitation, said at the conference some municipalities do not have the political will to perform better.
