Police clamp down on Klerksdorp gang crimes | News Article

North West police are clamping down on gang-related activity in Klerksdorp, arresting seven suspects last week alone.

Provincial police spokesperson, Adéle Myburgh, says the arrests emanate from eight reported crimes including arson and attempted murder – all committed in February 2021 in the Jouberton township. The apprehension of the suspects, who are between the ages of 28 and 53 years old, is the latest development in a string of arrests made in relation to these crimes.

Myburgh says the total number of gang-affiliated suspects arrested in connection with the incidents now stands at 17. It’s alleged some of the suspects torched and damaged property belonging to rival gang members. “Furthermore, several cases of attempted murder were opened during the same period for investigation,” says Myburgh.

The latest group has already appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court and will remain in custody till their next appearance on Friday 16 April.

These developments come after OFM News reported in late March that a man was fatally shot while three others sustained injuries in a shooting incident at a Jouberton-based tavern. Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, told OFM News that after the shooting incident a vehicle was also set alight. Numerous videos - showing patrons at the club running for cover while the gunman continues to shoot - did the rounds on social media.
