DA insists NC be declared disaster area─── 06:00 Fri, 26 Jul 2019
The DA has undertaken to apply serious pressure to the provincial government in the drought-stricken Northern Cape to have the entire province declared a disaster area.
The DA leader, Mmusi Maimane, visited Kimberley on Wednesday in order to gain first-hand insight into the consequences of the drought and to formulate a plan of action. He accused the ANC provincial government of failing to deal effectively with the growing crisis and further blamed the party for causing the situation to spiral out of control.
Maimane claimed that about 62 000 jobs are at risk in the Northern Cape due to the devastating drought and provincial government's failure to respond effectively to the crisis. Maimane also made it clear that only once the entire Northern Cape was declared a disaster area, could the proper funds be allocated where they were most needed, like the agricultural sector. Farming is of course one of the main sources of employment in the province.
