ARC researchers detection of rabies in the field─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 09:00 Mon, 09 Sep 2019
September is world rabies month with World Rabies day celebrated internationally on September 28.
Claude Sabeta, head of the rabies lab at the Agricultural Research Council of South Africa (ARC), says the aim of World Rabies Day is to raise awareness about the impact of human and animal rabies, how easy it is to prevent it, and how to eliminate the main global sources.
OFM News’ Olebogeng Motse spoke to Sabeta about research being done on the disease...

He says, most of the ARC’s research is centred on the improvement of diagnostics in specimens that are submitted. Research also aims at developing methods that can be used to detect the infection in the field. Rabies is a zoonotic disease which people can get from animals. It is caused by a virus which affects the brain and causes death. The virus is shed in saliva and is spread by the bite of an infected animal. In South Africa, people are usually infected by dogs, but other animals such as cats, mongooses, jackals and other wild animals can also infect people.
That was dr. Claude Sabeta from the Agricultural Research Center (ARC).
