Former FS HOD admits meeting at Gupta-residence─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 07:01 Thu, 31 Oct 2019
The former head of the Free State Agricultural Department, Peter Thabethe, admitted during his testimony at the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture, that he attended a meeting at the Gupta-residence in Saxonworld, Johannesburg.
The meeting related to the controversial Vrede Dairy Project. This comes after Thabethe previously claimed he never interacted with any member of the Gupta family. He, however, changed his statement this week saying he was given an address by someone he spoke to telephonically, more than once in 2013 while he was around Johannesburg at the time.
Evidence leader, advocate Leah Gcabashe, later referred to the Gupta e-mails showing Thabethe may have interacted with Tony Gupta.
Thabethe said upon reflection he remembered he met people from the Indian company, Paras, as a partner in the Estina Vrede project at the same address, but could not recall which member of the Gupta family he interacted with then.
In the following insert Gcabashe and the commission's chairperson, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, question Thabethe, about his affidavit and meeting in Johannesburg.
