Job seekers, employers should come together - department | News Article

Amidst the scourge of unemployment in South Africa, the Head of the Department of Employment and Labour, Emily Maneli, says the department is assisting unemployed graduates to get jobs through a database.

She said this during a job fair hosted by the department. Various stakeholders and unemployed graduates were invited to the fair in Bloemfontein, Free State, on Wednesday 20 November 2019.

The department’s spokesperson, Josial Ramokoena, says the database, called Employment Services of South Africa, is a matchmaking platform between job seekers and potential employers. Institutions with job opportunities and job seekers are registered in the database. The department provides counselling, preparations, aftercare and monitoring to job seekers before and after they are employed through this database. Public and private institutions are urged to come to the party by registering on the database and share job opportunities to ultimately bring down the levels of the unemployment rate.

According to the 2019 third-quarter survey of Statistics SA, 38.6 million people are of working age (15 – 64 years) in South Africa. Of these, 16.4 million are employed while 6.7 million are unemployed, 2.8 million are discouraged work-seekers and 12.7 million are not economically active.
