CUT students released from custody | News Article

The Central University of Technology (CUT) student representative council (SRC) in Bloemfontein says all 60 students who were arrested on Thursday have been released from police custody.

Their release follows after they were each granted bail of R1000 during the bail application at the city’s Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

The SRC president, Moses Ntonyane, claims the students were arrested unlawfully by the police.

He says the students were queuing for assistance with their academic records and proof that they applied for NSFAS funding.

Ntonyane says the management of CUT must also account for the unlawful arrests of these students because it is they who instructed students to come to campus.

The students were arrested for allegedly contravening a court order.

He further lashed out at the police, the South African Police Services (SAPS), for allegedly taking instructions from the management of the institution.

He has, however, apologised to each student who was arrested this week.

“The fight was never yours to win or lose, but you all lost anyway, and for that, I take full responsibility. We know that the police will make unlawful arrests to scare off the student leadership but rest assured, we are not shaken,” he adds.
