The Free State Department of Education hosted the 3rd Annual Heritage Career Expo along with the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology.
In a social media post, MEC of Education, Tate Makgoe, expressed his gratitude to the deputy minister, Buti Manamela, for the opportunity of exposing the grade 9 to 11 learners in the province to a wide variety of career opportunities.
Makgoe stated the department is currently fighting the high rate of youth unemployment with everything they have.
He further extended his gratitude to all the Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) who were able to showcase their products and services at the expo.
The expo was hosted at Motheo TVET College's National Artisan Academy, under the theme “Unlocking the Wealth in Our Heritage”.
Makgoe, during his address stated “this career expo will actually show us the skills that we need as the province. Young people, you must use this opportunity and take it serious.”
The expo followed Manamela’s two other expos which were held in Gauteng and Limpopo, respectively.
The expo is aimed to expose young people in the post-schooling education and training sector to the heritage industry. The exposure was mainly directed at students in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and universities.
The expo was also held with the aim of empowering stakeholders such as artists, chefs, crafters and poets by creating opportunities for skills development and career awareness among young people.
Over 500 learners were in attendance and they were taken through different exhibition villages, toured the Centre of Specialisation, and listened to and engaged with speakers, including the Manamela.
