Dignity packs sponsored for #GBV survivors─── TSHEHLA KOTELI 12:10 Tue, 02 Aug 2022

Dignity packs for at least 100 gender-based violence (GBV) survivors in the Free State will be handed over to shelters in the Welkom-area that have a high rate of GBV cases.
The dignity packs packaged and donated by South African Breweries (SAB) employees, were accepted by Free State MEC of the Department of Social Development, Mamiki Qabathe, to conclude the month of Nelson Mandela.
Regional Director at SAB, Bridget Makhura said that poverty remains a major challenge to the dignity of women, in many cases resulting in a lack of access to basic toiletries.
Qabathe explains that in the next few weeks the packages will be delivered to two GBV shelters, Goldfields Shelter in Welkom and one at Bloemspruit.
She further explained that those shelters work closely with police stations for GBV survivors. “Goldfields work with the Thabong Police Station, which happens to be one of the police stations in the province faced with a high rate of GBV cases,” said Qabathe.
She also shared that the police station has been rated in the top 30 of GBV cases on national crime statistics. One of the reasons for the donation of the dignity packs is to help the victims when they escape from their perpetrators to keep and stay clean.
“The dignity packs contain items that will help the recipients to hold their heads high,” said Makhura. Qabathe expressed her gratitude to the employees that have taken it upon themselves to assist with the donations.
