North West police have asked residents to help with information following a robbery at the intersection of Bray Road and Unit 13 in Mahikeng.

The robbery was recorded and circulated on social media. It can be seen in the video that two males were robbing occupants of a white Toyota Fortuner at the intersection.

The video shows the suspects threatening the occupants with a firearm in an attempt to rob them of their belongings. A substantial amount of money was stolen during the robbery, which occurred on Thursday (21/8).

“Police are aware of the video that is circulating; a case has been opened, and an investigation into the matter is underway,” said North West police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh.

“It is clear that this was a well-planned and not random robbery, as the suspects knew what they were looking for, which was the money that the victim had.”

Police request that anyone with information that can assist in the investigation contact Lt Col Ompolokile Letebele on 082 416 3749 or Sgt Pitso Kgetsana on 079 897 1858.

There must be witnesses with information that can lead to the identification and arrest of the suspects, as the incident happened in public, in broad daylight, and was recorded and circulated on social media, says acting provincial commissioner Gen. Patrick Asaneng.

The 2024/2025 fourth quarter crime statistics in North West showed a reduction in the general category of robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Carjacking and robbery at residential premises remained a challenge, particularly in the Bojanala District. Carjackings increased by 1.2%, while robberies at residential premises recorded an increase of 3.5%.

“The request and message to those who saw what happened or may identify the perpetrators is to please assist the police and not allow these dangerous rascals to escape arrest,” said Asaneng.

Keeping quiet will only benefit and embolden these armed, dangerous criminals, who must be stopped before they injure or kill innocent people.”
