The South African Civil Aviation Authority will conduct a comprehensive investigation to establish the cause of a helicopter crash that resulted in the deaths of three men (23 and 34) between Danielskuil and Kuruman in the Northern Cape.
Northern Cape police have opened inquest dockets to investigate the circumstances surrounding their deaths after the helicopter crashed on Sunday (26/10) in a remote area between the two towns. The investigation into the crash is expected to take several weeks, during which authorities will examine all available evidence and flight records.
A statement by the accidents and incidents investigations division confirmed that an Alouette helicopter went down in Danielskuil on Sunday. “All three occupants on board, a pilot and two other people, were fatally injured,” said the statement.
“Police are investigating an inquest docket into the deaths of the three occupants,” said Northern Cape police spokesperson Cherelle Ehlers. “The Civil Aviation Authority will be investigating the cause of the crash.”

Meanwhile, in March, a helicopter crashed within the Lohatla Military Base in the Northern Cape during a private flight from Mons Farm in the John Taolo Gaetsewe district to Kabeljauws Farm in Jeffrey’s Bay, Eastern Cape.
The crash occurred after a loss of main rotor revolutions per minute (RPM) caused the helicopter to lose lift and make a hard landing inside the base perimeter.
After about an hour in the air, while flying near the Lohatla Military Base, the passenger requested an unscheduled landing due to a medical need.

Shortly after take-off, the helicopter’s main rotor RPM dropped below 97% triggering a warning light. The pilot attempted to recover control through autorotation, but the rate could not be stabilised.
This resulted in a hard landing about 100 metres from the base’s perimeter fence. The impact severed the tail boom as the main rotor blades struck it, causing substantial damage to the aircraft.
The pilot and the passenger escaped without any injuries.
