Motorists urged to exercise caution during storm in southern Free State─── ZENANDE MPAME 15:48 Mon, 10 Nov 2025
With heavy rainfall and thunderstorms expected to continue in southern Free State until Tuesday (11/11), road safety has become a critical priority.
Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution on the roads. Reduced visibility, slippery surfaces, and sudden flooding remain major concerns, prompting warnings for drivers to slow down, keep headlights on, and maintain safe following distances.
The SA Weather Service has predicted a 100% chance of rain on Monday in Bloemfontein with considerable cloudiness accompanied by showers and thunderstorms. Tuesday will see a 63% chance of rain with a couple of showers in the morning and some cloudiness.

Conditions can result in flooding in certain streets and roads. Road users are advised to slow down and drive with caution.
Motorists need to adapt their driving according to the weather, said the Automobile Association of South Africa. “They need to brake earlier, enter corners at slower speeds, and maintain focus on the road ahead at all times.

“It is also important that motorists check that their windscreen wipers are working properly in the front and back, and that their brakes are sound. Motorists should also check the condition of their tyres to avoid aquaplaning.”
Aquaplaning occurs when a vehicle’s tyres lose traction on a wet road because a layer of water builds up between the tires and the road surface, according to Continental Tyres.
If it’s been raining for a few minutes, there's a chance of standing water and therefore a risk of aquaplaning.
The Free State department of community safety, roads, and transport has advised the public to:
- Avoid crossing flooded areas, especially rivers and low-water bridges;
- Do not attempt to walk or drive through fast-moving water; and
- Find alternative routes and wait for water levels to drop before proceeding.

An inquiry has been sent to Mangaung metro about the stormwater drainage system because of the number of flooded streets. No response has been received.
