The police in the Northern Cape are intensifying their fight against contact crimes, identifying excessive alcohol consumption as the primary driver behind violence in the province.

High-ranking officials have noted a troubling trend where alcohol abuse consistently acts as a root cause for serious offenses, including murder, attempted murder, and various forms of assault.

By targeting the source of these issues, the police hope to see a significant drop in the number of victims across the region.

“The policing of contact crimes and other related crimes associated with excessive alcohol consumption remains a priority for the police in the Northern Cape,” said police spokesperson Molefi Shemane.

Current data from crime pattern and threat analyses show a distinct spike in criminal activity during weekends. This period coincides with increased social gatherings and high levels of liquor consumption, which often leads to heated confrontations and impaired judgment.

The police have highlighted gender-based violence and femicide, along with sexual assaults and rapes, are frequently linked to these environments.

Consequently, the policing of liquor-related offenses has been moved to the top of the priority list for provincial law enforcement.

Patrols

To combat this, the police are not only increasing patrols but also reaching out to the public with a comprehensive set of safety guidelines. They believe while the police are responsible for enforcement, the community plays a vital role in prevention.

Staying alert and being aware of one’s surroundings are described as the best first lines of defense against potential attackers.

The police strongly advise residents to use the buddy system when out at night. This means never going to a bathroom alone at a public venue and always leaving social events with trusted friends.

Authorities also warn against accepting drinks or lifts from strangers, as these situations can quickly turn dangerous. To avoid being targeted for robbery or sexual assault, people are urged to keep valuable items out of sight and to stay in well-lit, busy areas rather than taking shortcuts through secluded spots.

For those who find themselves in immediate danger, the police recommend making as much noise as possible to attract help. If a crime does occur, victims are urged not to shower or change clothes, as this can destroy crucial DNA evidence needed for a conviction.

Additionally, witnesses are encouraged to use their phones to record details like license plate numbers or suspect descriptions, provided it is safe to do so.

Ultimately, officials remind the public drinking responsibly is key to staying safe. Being sober allows a person to maintain their instincts.
