HTS Sasolburg rugby player laid to rest─── ZENANDE MPAME 13:56 Mon, 20 Apr 2026
Free State police are investigating an inquest after the death of an HTS Sasolburg Grade 9 learner.
Nhlakanipho Buthelezi, 15, was laid to rest on Saturday (18/4) in the Sasolburg cemetery after a service in the Dutch Reformed church in Vaalpark. Nhlakanipho collapsed during a school rugby match in Sasolburg on Friday (10/4) during an Under-15 match against Sasolburg High School.
He experienced breathing difficulties during the match. Emergency medical personnel responded swiftly, and he was rushed to Sasolburg Hospital, but was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A memorial service was held by the school on Wednesday (15/4) to celebrate Nhlakanipho’s life.
His rugby coach, Thorne Swart, shared a post and said, “You were not the biggest, but we lost a giant of our game. We lost a brother. You will always be remembered for your hard work on and off the field.
“Just being good was never enough for you. You always strived to be excellent and great in what you do, academics and sports. Words can’t describe the emptiness you left behind.
“The future ahead of us will not be easy, but in these tough times, we should remember that Nipho was never a guy who gave up. That mindset will help us through it and play it in your name, the Nipho season.”
HTS Sasolburg posted on the school’s Facebook page confirming the death of Nhlakanipho and extending condolences to his parents, family, friends, teachers, and the entire school community during this difficult time.
Free State police spokesperson Josephine Rani confirmed that Sasolburg detectives have opened an inquest.
“Nhlakanipho’s passing reminds us of the fragility of life. We stand with his loved ones and the school community in mourning this loss,” said Free State education spokesperson Howard Ndaba.
“We will support the school and family in any way possible. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the HTS Sasolburg community.”
The FNB Classic Clash between HTS Sasolburg and Sasolburg High School is an annual event that’s been going strong for about 47 years, he said.
