Proteas brace for defining Super 8 clash against India─── MORGAN PIEK 09:52 Sun, 22 Feb 2026
The Proteas face arguably their biggest test of the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup on Sunday when they meet co-hosts India in their opening Super 8 fixture in Ahmedabad.
This blockbuster encounter is a repeat of the 2024 final, where India edged South Africa by seven runs in Barbados – a result that still lingers in Proteas memory.
Both sides head into the clash unbeaten, setting up a mouthwatering contest between two in-form teams. South Africa may take some comfort from having played three of their four Group D matches at the venue, giving them valuable insight into local conditions.
However, India in their own backyard present a vastly different challenge – one that will demand near-perfection from the Proteas.

South Africa’s campaign has been impressive so far, but Sunday will require a complete performance with bat, ball, and in the field.
Opening batter and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock believes familiarity with conditions in Ahmedabad could offer a slight edge.
“The team is quite settled at the moment, and that has definitely helped. We’ve been in Ahmedabad for a while now, so we’ve got used to the environment. I’ve settled in nicely – no real headaches so far.”
De Kock, who boasts extensive experience playing in India, emphasised that conditions, particularly the nature of the pitch, will be crucial.
“It all depends on how the wicket plays. If it’s not turning, it becomes easier to face the spinners. From what we’ve seen in Ahmedabad, the pitches have been a bit more seamer-friendly, and the spin hasn’t dominated as much.”

He added adaptability will be key. “At the end of the day, it’s all about reading conditions and adjusting. That’s always the challenge in cricket.”
With a place in the semi-finals potentially hanging in the balance, the stakes could hardly be higher. The Proteas will need to produce one of their most complete performances of the tournament if they are to overcome a confident Indian side on home soil.
Sunday’s highly anticipated clash gets underway at 15:30.
