A South African short film could soon be coming home with a mini-Oscar. "Kanyekanye, which was directed and written by 24-year-old Miklas Manneke, has been named a finalist at the 40th Student Academy Awards.

"Kanyekanye" is a fairytale-type love story set in a township in the Vaal Triangle. Manneke worked on the film the whole of last year, which was a project for his final academic year at The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance.

The Student Academy Awards is judged by the same panel as The Oscars, and held in the same theatre.

38 students from 17 US colleges and universities, and only nine students from foreign institutions were this year selected as finalists. The awards ceremony will take place on June 8 in Beverly Hills.

Manneke says the film turned out to be a memorable project.
