An idea sparked to make the load lighter for others facing treatment, long hours of chemo, and times of loneliness. The Davis Foundation believes in spreading hope, one care bag at a time.

Their journey began in January last year, when South African rugby player Aidon Davis and his wife, Sune, started the foundation after Aidon was diagnosed with cancer. By providing care bags to those diagnosed with cancer, they are turning a personal battle into a platform for serving others.

Aidon joins Yolanda Maartens to invite listeners to help spread kindness by sharing their platform for serving those who need these care bags.

Toughest season

Imagine being in your mid-20s, fit, young, and full of life, only to have your world turned upside down by a diagnosis no one ever expects. That was the reality for Aidon and Sune. But instead of letting the “match” overwhelm them, Aidon approached his treatment exactly like a professional rugby game: with strength, focus, and a solid strategy.

Every morning, he packed a backpack. It wasn’t filled with rugby boots or jerseys, but with the essentials for a different kind of endurance: headphones, snacks, a water bottle, and things to keep his mind busy during the long hours of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This simple routine didn’t just pass the time; it provided comfort, dignity, and a sense of control.

Bag of hope

They realised while they had each other, many people walking this path feel incredibly alone. They decided to take Aidon’s personal “recovery kit” and turn it into a lifeline for others.

Each Davis Foundation care bag costs approximately R1,000 and is packed with items specifically chosen based on Aidon’s own journey. These aren’t just goodies, they are tools for the fight.

  • Stress balls: To assist with blood flow during cannulation and keep the nerves steady.
  • Small coolbags: Perfect for storing necessary post-chemo injections or snacks.
  • Tracking journals: A space to record moods, gratitude, and daily victories.
  • Adult colouring books and pens: To provide a much-needed mental escape and stress relief.
  • A small Bible: To offer a reminder that in Christ, there is always a quiet confidence good things are on the way.

Strength

What makes this story even more incredible is that Aidon continued to play professional rugby for the Toyota Cheetahs and the Exeter Chiefs while undergoing treatment. It is a powerful testament to mindset, the importance of a support system, and God’s grace.

At the heart of The Davis Foundation is a simple belief: by giving a little, we can change a lot. They are inviting you to join the team. Whether it’s through a donation or simply sharing their mission, you are helping a cancer warrior face their next session with the gear they need and the reminder that they aren’t fighting solo.
