SAHRC intervenes in farm evictions | News Article

Bloemfontein - The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) says it is going to intensify measures in dealing with the increasing number of evictions, more particularly farm evictions in the Free State.

According to the Commission’s Provincial Manager, Buang Jones, the National Department of Human Settlements is to make its way to the province this coming Friday to discuss plans of action to prevent further evictions. Jones says the commission plans to subpoena the municipal manager of Maluti a Phofung and the provincial Head of the Department of Human Settlements following the eviction of village dwellers in Qwaqwa.

Jones says they are still monitoring the recommendation of implementation in the Bokamoso evictions in Qwaqwa.

He says the commission will ascertain whether there is progress made regarding the protection of rights of the hundreds of people who were evicted by the municipality a few years ago.

He calls on the Legal Aid and the Provincial Department of Human Settlements to assist in dealing with the issue of land evictions and farm evictions.
