Substance abuse increasingly becoming a problem among FS youth | News Article

Bloemfontein - Drugs and alcohol abuse among the youth in the Free State is growing at an alarming rate.

This is according to one of the biggest substance abuse rehabilitation centres in the province, Aurora Alcohol and Drug Centre. The centre’s Director, Gert Kruger, says the use of substance abuse among the youth can currently be described as a ticking time bomb. Kruger says Nyaope and alcohol are increasingly being used in townships, and more needs to be done to address the scourge. Krugers says although the preventions of drug abuse among the youth will not be a short term project, there is a high need to educate the youth on the dangers of substance abuse and strengthen the police force.

As the country draws closer to the end of youth month, young people are warned to stay far from substance abuse and illegal activities.

Kruger says poverty, unemployment, and peer pressure are some of the reasons as to why young people use drugs. “There are many reasons as to why people use drugs. Other causes can include personality factors, affluence and many others”.

Kruger advises parents to be weary of how their children spend their allowances. He advises them to maintain an excellent example to their children and to be aware of what they are doing and who they associate with.

Kruger calls on communities, the government, and policy makers to join hands in fighting the scourge.

“The government has excellent policies and guidelines, but above that we are also in need of commitment that is similar to fighting the scourge of HIV/Aids. We need that kind of commitment from all members of society. We need to realise how the future of this country can be compromised by the easy access and availability of drugs in our society.”

He says as much as there is a need to ensure that drugs are not easily accessible, there is also a need to ensure that the youth are taught life skills and given information on substance abuse.
