Mineral Resources Minister, Mosebenzi Zwane, says his department has a budget of almost R2 billion to rehabilitate various asbestos mines in several provinces, including the Northern Cape.

In a reply to a written question by DA MP, Thomas Hadebe, he said the budget will finance the rehabilitation of these mines by 2029. Zwane says this forms part of the department’s 2008 asbestos rehabilitation project meant to restore the environment at areas where mining took place.

More than R150 million has already been used and eleven out of twenty-one asbestos mines that have been rehabilitated so far, are in the Northern Cape. The rest are located in KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo. A total of 234 more mines are on the department’s to-do-list.
