Calm has been restored today in the Northern Cape’s Pampierstad, following the closure of Piet Strydom Road at Hartswater by protesters in the area yesterday.

This is according to police spokesperson in the province, Olebogeng Tawana, who said the police were still monitoring the situation and no arrests have been made in yesterday’s protests. This comes after the disgruntled residents in the town embarked on protest action yesterday over their alleged dissatisfaction with certain members of council at the Phokwane Local Municipality, which is at Hartswater, 17 kilometres from Pampierstad.

Tawana told OFM News that when confronted with the protestors, police acted swiftly by removing the tyres and rocks that were barricading the road. OFM is yet to ascertain what issues these are and who the involved officials are. Municipal spokesperson, Kgalalelo Letshabo, could not be reached for comment on clarity regarding these alleged issues.

The Phokwane Local Municipality is situated within the Frances Baard District and takes care of five towns, including Pampierstad, Jan Kempdorp, and Hartswater. According to the 2011 Stats SA census, the municipality has a population of about 63 000 people.
