Agri SA worried over spate of farm attacks─── SABRINA DEAN 15:29 Tue, 09 Jun 2015

Bloemfontein - Agri SA is urging rural communities to know their neighbors, communicate and participate in structures aimed at curbing crime on farms and rural areas.
The organisation’s rural safety committee chairperson Kobus Breytenbach says Agri SA is very worried at the recent spate of farm attacks, which have seen at least three people killed and numerous others injured or tortured during nine separate incidents across the country.
Breytenbach says communities must become involved in ensuring their own safety:

He says criminals are scared of communication and urges rural residents to get to know their neighbors and improve communication. He also says it is important for people to join structures such as farm patrols or neighborhood watch movements as a means of curbing criminal activity in their areas.
Three suspects are scheduled to appear in the Marquard Magistrate’s Court today in connection with an attack on an elderly couple on their farm in Marquard on Sunday night.
Two more suspects meanwhile appeared in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the murder of 64-year-old farmer Christo Kruger. Frank Itumeleng (22) and Ben Thabo (19) will remain in custody until a formal bail application on 15 June.
