Likely increase in potato prices on the cards

Likely increase in potato prices on the cards | News Article

South Africans can expect to see an increase in potato prices due to the possible reduced supply of this beloved vegetable.

The possible reduction in supply is a result of provisional tariffs being reinstated against the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. An investigation found that the three countries dumped frozen French fries in South African markets. Thabile Nkujana, from the National Agricultural Marketing Council, says anti-dumping duties against these three countries have now been reinstated until 31 January 2023, after it expired in January last year.

The Department of Water and Sanitation says it has managed to reduce the backlog in water use license applications, as well as reduce the processing of applications from 300 days to 90 days. In a recent statement, the department shared that a backlog of 812 water use authorisations had been finalised by 30 June this year out of a target number of 998. It said that the remaining water use authorisations will be finalised by the end of this month. Between April 2021 and March 2022, the department finalised 613 of 971 water use applications. This, while in the first quarter of this year, which ran from April to June, 113 applications of the targeted 150 were finalised.

South Africa's agricultural export activity will likely soften this year from the 2021 record of 12.4 billion US dollars. According to the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, or Agbiz, lower production of key crops, the spread of animal diseases, and changes in phytosanitary regulations in key markets such as the EU will all weigh on the export activity this year. OFM News' Elsabé Richard-May reports that Agbiz further explains the changes in export volumes and values might not show in the year's first half but will likely reflect in the second half of the year.
