Deetlefs calls it a day after 271 caps for SA─── MORGAN PIEK 15:00 Wed, 25 Aug 2021
The triple Olympian and long-time stalwart of the South African women's hockey team, Lisa-Marie Deetlefs, has announced her retirement from the sport at an international level.
Deetlefs, who was the most experienced South African player at the recent Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, with 271 caps, finished her career as the fifth highest capped player the country has produced.
“I’ve been dreading this moment for the longest time,” said Deetlefs.
“The moment when you realise that as much as you’d like to continue, you simply just can’t.
“I’ve lived and breathed this beautiful sport on the international stage since 2007 and it’s now time for me to start a different chapter.
“I have been privileged and honoured to have worn the SA jersey on so many occasions and at so many events.
“Like every sports person says, there have been many highs and many lows - but even so - I wouldn’t have changed one single thing!
“I can’t begin to describe how much I grew, not only as a player but more so as a person and I will be forever grateful for that!”
Deetlefs, who made her national debut against Canada in 2007, also represented South Africa at the FIH World Cup three times, and the Commonwealth Games on three occasions.
Recently, two stalwarts of the men's game, Rassie Pieterse and Austin Smith, also called it a day.
