Minister Pravin Gordhan is being made the scapegoat in the ongoing electricity crisis in South Africa. This is according to political analyst André Duvenhage.

His comment follows in the wake of a back-and-forth mudslinging between Gordhan and the ANC Youth League (ANCYL).

Newly elected ANCYL President, Collen Malatji, recently expressed his disapproval over the sale of state-owned companies, particularly Eskom.

Gordhan in response labelled Malatji’s statements as ill-considered. Duvenhage is not surprised that the ANCYL and others are not eager to give up their state-capture cash cow. He further demanded a public apology from Malatji.

"Eskom was used as a cash cow for the ANC to appoint cadres, channel finances, etc. Now they are forced to reorganise Eskom due to realities. The ANCYL, Cosatu, the EFF and other roleplayers are blaming Pravin Gordhan for paving the way for the privatisation of Eskom" said Duvenhage.

Duvenhage, however, says Gordhan is not the only one to blame for the situation at the state-owned entity.

"There are also problems with regards to Gwede Mantashe, but this is merely indicative of a larger problem within the ANC," Duvenhage added.

Finally, Duvenhage is of the opinion that because of the electricity crisis and other social and municipal ills, next year’s election will be the most difficult for the ANC since 1994.

“According to the latest opinion polls, the ANC is in trouble in at least six of the 9 provinces in the country, and it is unlikely that the ruling party will get a 2/3 majority again.”
