Tatjana Schoenmaker is the new Olympic 200m breaststroke champion and world record holder.

Schoenmaker broke the world record at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo on Friday as she won South Africa’s first gold medal, to add to her silver she won in the 100m breaststroke.

The 24-year-old Schoenmaker touched the wall in 2:18.95 to set the new standard.

In doing so she beat the USA’s Lilly King, who led more than half of the race by nearly a full second.

King touched the wall in 2:19.92, while her American compatriot, Annie Lazor, took the bronze in 2:20.84.

The Bloemfontein-born Kaylene Corbett had to settle for fifth overall in a time of 2:22.06.

Schoenmaker said she is ready to go and celebrate with her parents.

“It still hasn't really sunk it,” said an elated Schoenmaker.

“I'm also excited to go back home and celebrate with my family.

“I don't wish my Olympic dream over, but I am excited to just really go and celebrate even being at the Olympics with my parents.”

South Africa’s medal tally is now standing at three with the other being the surfer, Bianca Buitendag’s silver medal.
