Oliewenhuis Art Museum is excited to present the annual Art Museum Guide exhibition with artworks sourced from Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s Permanent Collection and The Art Bank of South Africa’s Contemporary Collection.

Mid-Morning Magic's Yolanda Maartens talks to Art Musuem Guide, Siobahn Swart, about this great opportunity to present their own exhibition.

transition • liminality • adaptation was curated by the current 2022/2023 Art Museum Guides at Oliewenhuis.

Kgahliso Kau, Xola Brilliant Sello, Jacobeth Selinga, Siobhan Swart and the Presidential Employment Stimulus Programme (PESP3) Work-Based Experience Programme Interns; Hlompho Dimpho Shale and Natley Barnardo had a hand in bringing to life the composition that is transition • liminality • adaptation.

These ‘young emerging artists,' being recent graduates in visual arts or close to graduating have explained that they often find themselves questioning what it means to become successful artists, and whether this means limiting their originality and creativity for the purpose of acknowledgement and acceptance in the visual art industry.

Therefore, within their exhibition, they explore and challenge the barrier that separates ingenuity and conformity.

With artworks sourced from Oliewenhuis Art Museum’s  very own Permanent Collection as well as The Art Bank of South Africa’s Contemporary Collection, the exhibition has been carefully curated with the aim of raising questions within the notions of the art industry.  The variety of artworks that have been selected showcase a diverse use of media and conceptual ideas.

Exploring themes such as identity, spirituality, mental health, the macabre, humour and satire within the exhibition, artworks relating to these themes and expressing them were selected. The curated exhibition juxtaposes the artistic expressions by both emerging and established artists bringing a well rounded visual experience to the viewer.
