The Northern Cape police have started investigations into the death of a police officer who was killed while off duty.
It’s alleged that at about 05:00 Monday morning, a tenant residing in a shack at the deceased’s back yard and an acquaintance were involved in an altercation at separate premises in Bathlaros, Kuruman.
Provincial police spokesperson, Mashay Gamieldien, explained that the tenant fled home but was followed by the suspect who shot him in the leg inside his shack behind the house of the police sergeant. The victim ran for help to the police officer and when he came out of his house, the suspect shot him in the back.
“The deceased sadly succumbed on the scene while the other male victim was rushed to hospital for medical treatment. The JTG District police initiated 72-hour activation plan and all the relevant resources are currently mobilised and activated to ensure the apprehension and arrest of the suspect,” she said.
Gamaldien further said the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI) will be investigating the case.
Meanwhile, the Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Mmantsheke Lekhele, said she is saddened and disheartened by the tragic and untimely loss of the member as the safety of our members remains a priority.

National police spokesperson, Athlenda Mathe, recently stated that police have declared war against criminals who attack and kill police officers. Her statement came after two suspects linked to the killing of a detective commander attached to the Villiers Police Station in the Free State were arrested.
“This is a war that has been called by criminals, we cannot come second. We cannot co-rule with criminals, communities have put their trust in us and we need to fight back to ensure the safety and security of our communities and police officers. We are going to respond accordingly until we win this fight against criminals. The families of these officers are looking up to us to ensure that those who are behind these killings and attacks face the full might of the law,” she said.
Mathe further revealed that R25 million has been set aside to enhance the safety and security of all police service points for this financial year.
