For 35 years, Mediclinic Bloemfontein has stood as a beacon of quality care and medical innovation in Central South Africa.
What began as a 270-bed facility has evolved into a sophisticated healthcare hub, now supporting approximately 400 patients every day. With a strong foundation rooted in patient-centred care, Mediclinic Bloemfontein continues to lead the way through expansion, advanced technology, and exceptional clinical outcomes.
From its early days, the hospital has continually expanded its capabilities to meet growing demand. A key milestone was the opening of the emergency unit in 1994, which has since been expanded twice – and is once again preparing for growth to accommodate the region’s healthcare needs.
Hospital General Manager, Carol Defty, joined Yolanda Maartens to talk about this milestone and the new Da Vinci procedure that recently launched:
In 2000, the launch of the cardiac unit and theatres positioned Mediclinic Bloemfontein as a regional leader in heart care, a role it still proudly upholds.
The hospital has since embraced advancements in surgical technology, being among the first in the region to perform robotic-assisted knee replacements. Since the introduction of robotic surgery in 2021, over 1 000 successful knee procedures have been completed using cutting-edge systems such as ROSA and Mako, designed to offer unmatched precision and improved recovery times.
The latest innovation? The arrival of the Da Vinci robotic surgical system, a state-of-the-art tool that empowers surgeons to perform highly delicate procedures with improved accuracy, reduced bleeding, shorter hospital stays, and faster patient recovery.
While the term ‘robot’ may seem intimidating, the Da Vinci system is always under the expert control of a trained surgeon. It enhances the surgeon’s skill; it does not replace it.
Currently, four Mediclinic Bloemfontein surgeons are trained to operate the system, with four more undergoing training in the coming year, expanding the range of surgeries that can be performed robotically.
Beyond high-tech care, Mediclinic Bloemfontein continues to focus on what matters most: the patient. Every hospital in the Mediclinic group employs a dedicated Client Experience Manager, committed to improving patient journeys and addressing feedback in real time.
Through ongoing client surveys and outcome tracking, the hospital can make immediate, meaningful changes in care. Initiatives such as Care Expert ensure that joint replacement patients are supported every step of the way, from consultation to recovery.
As Mediclinic Bloemfontein looks toward the future, its mission remains clear: to deliver expertise you can trust through outstanding client experiences and quality clinical care. As a key healthcare provider in Central South Africa, the hospital is committed to continued investment, expansion, and innovation, ensuring its next 35 years are even more impactful than the last.
