A Klerksdorp mathematics and science teacher has gone above and beyond the call of duty by securing 400 desks for his school.

Mokete Flatela (56), from Nkang Mahlale Secondary School in Jouberton, realised the school urgently needed infrastructural contributions. Concerned about the lack of adequate furniture, he took it upon himself to write letters to nearby mines requesting assistance.

The school had previously benefited from renovations worth about R3 million.

At the beginning of the school year, Flatela was allocated a classroom without sufficient furniture. As learners moved between classes during period changes, teachers grew increasingly frustrated because there were no desks in the classrooms learners were moving to.

This ongoing challenge compelled Flatela to approach the private sector in search of a solution, said North West education spokesperson Vuyo Mantshule. Harmony Gold Mine responded positively to his request for 400 desks.

Flatela says he was overwhelmed by the positive response. “After realising that my learners were struggling without the school furniture, I could not wait for the department to deliver, so I took it upon myself.

“I did not even inform my school principal about my little project of soliciting furniture for the learners. They only found out when Harmony Gold Mine requested a school letterhead for the application.”

The approval of his request reaffirmed his passion for education, he adds. “I was over the moon when I heard it had been approved. I knew these desks would change the quality of education for the African child, and I thank Harmony for their positive response.

“My passion for education is fully realised when I see learners able to acquire education in a conducive learning environment.”

North West education MEC Viola Motsumi applauded Flatela for what she described as “exceptional dedication”. “I wish to thank Mr Flatela for the heroism he displayed at Nkang Mahlale Secondary School.

“His conviction and dedication did not allow him to limit himself to his position at the school. He believed that seeking help for the school is not the sole responsibility of the principal alone, but of everyone in the school.

‘I regard him as a hero’

“I regard him as a hero in our schools, and I believe that we need many more Mr Flatelas in our education system.”

Government alone cannot meet all the needs of every school, Motsumi acknowledged. She encouraged community members to follow Flatela’s example. This initiative demonstrates how individuals can make a meaningful difference from within any position they occupy, she said.

The department confirmed 200 double desks were delivered to the school on Friday, with the remaining 200 expected to arrive this week.
