Free State police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following a fatal accident on the R26 near Fouriesburg.
The collision between a minibus taxi with 22 occupants and a sedan with five occupants claimed the lives of six people on Saturday (3/1). The remaining 19 occupants are recovering in hospitals in Bethlehem and Bohlokong.
The DA conveyed its condolences to families who mourn the deaths of the people involved in the car accident, as well as those who lost loved ones over the festive season. As the festive season draws to an end, motorists travelling through the Free State are urged to be patient, rest regularly, and adhere to road rules, especially speed limits.
“A case of culpable homicide has been opened for investigation,” said Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring.
“The names of the deceased and injured will not be released until their next of kin have been formally informed, and identification processes have been completed.”
A white Kia sedan with Free State registration was travelling from Mashaeng location towards Fouriesburg when the driver, 21, allegedly failed to stop at an intersection. He collided with a white Mercedes-Benz 22-seater minibus taxi with Gauteng registration, travelling from Ficksburg to Pretoria.

The sedan had five occupants. Three people died at the scene, while two sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital.

“The DA expresses gratitude to the emergency services in the Free State who were on stand-by to assist the many road users over the festive season, from law enforcement to medical services,” said Free State DA leader Roy Jankielsohn.
“The province owes a debt of gratitude to the many people who remain on duty while others are enjoying various festivities.”
Motorists are reminded to:
- plan their journey;
- ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy;
- get enough rest before the journey;
- rest every 200 km;
- not drink and drive; and
- obey all traffic regulations and arrive safely.
