“You do not need to take any supplements or beverages to detox your body,” said registered dietitian Azwiwe Booi.

While many people seek a quick way to reset their health after the holidays, Booi said these products often lack scientific evidence because the human body already features a natural filtration system.

Putting unverified powders or pills into the body carries real risks. These products can contain hidden toxins or fillers the liver cannot easily process, potentially leading to organ strain or serious medical emergencies.

“The supplement industry is unregulated, which means they can make claims that are not backed by any science.”

Many popular detox products lead to frequent bathroom trips, which consumers often mistake for toxins leaving the body. In reality, this is simply water loss, which can lead to severe dehydration.

In Booi’s professional experience, some clients have even ended up in the hospital after trying aggressive detox trends that removed essential nutrients and disrupted the body’s fluid balance.

Replacing sugary sodas or excessive coffee with rooibos tea is a way she advises to aid hydration. Unlike caffeine, which can have a diuretic effect, rooibos contains antioxidants which support heart health and immunity.

“It is about making sustainable changes to your actual lifestyle, including sleep and movement.”

A balanced approach includes lean proteins like fish and legumes, healthy plant-based fats, and high-quality carbohydrates. She suggested eating fiber-rich foods, such as brown starches and unpeeled vegetables, to support natural digestion.

Aiming for several portions of colourful produce daily ensures the body receives the vitamins and minerals it needs to function at its best.

Physical activity and rest complete the wellness picture. The World Health Organisation recommends at least 150 minutes of movement per week, paired with seven to nine hours of quality sleep.

These consistent, everyday choices provide the long-term benefits that unregulated supplements simply cannot replicate.
