Residents of Central South Africa have been urged to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during the hottest parts of the day between 11:00 and 16:00.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has forecast very hot to extremely hot conditions. These conditions will persist across the Free State, the northern parts of the Northern Cape, the southern areas of North West, and the southern Gauteng region over the next few days.

Temperatures are expected to remain high, often exceeding 30?°C, with uncomfortable conditions likely to continue into the week.

SAWS has advised the public to stay hydrated, keep cool, and use sunscreen when outdoors. Farmers and outdoor workers are encouraged to adjust working hours and take frequent breaks to reduce exposure.

Tips to protect yourself in the heat:

  • Farmers and outdoor workers should adjust working hours and rest often.
  • Stay indoors in cool or shaded areas where possible.
  • Check regularly on vulnerable groups, including the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and people with chronic illnesses.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and use hats or umbrellas outdoors.
  • Never leave children or pets in parked cars.
  • Be alert for signs of heat-related illnesses such as heat rash, cramps, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke.

Severe thunderstorms

In addition to the heat, SAWS has issued a yellow level two warning for severe thunderstorms, with localised flooding possible on susceptible roads, low-lying areas, and bridges. Large amounts of small hail are expected over parts of the Free State, North West, Gauteng, western KwaZulu-Natal, southern Mpumalanga, and the extreme north-east of the Northern Cape.

Extremely high fire danger conditions are also predicted over most parts of the Northern Cape.

Residents in affected regions are urged to remain weather-aware, take heat precautions, and be prepared for afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
