The Portfolio Committee on Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has successfully completed its oversight visit to a number of projects in the Free State.

Chairperson of the committee, Rosina Semenya, told OFM News they were satisfied with some of the projects which form part of government's land restitution programmes, but serious challenges remain at other projects like the controversial Vrede Dairy Project. She says the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development had an opportunity to respond on the committee's observations after each visit. The MEC of Agriculture in the Free State, Benny Malakoane, and his team are expected to meet with the committee in October to finalise the outstanding issues.

The National Council of SPCAs says it has laid charges against four mohair farmers, following a recent exposé by the animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), who uncovered alleged abuse on farms in the Eastern and Western Cape. NSPCA Farm Animal Protection Unit Manager, Grace De Lange, says footage revealed Angora goats being dragged by their horns and legs, being lifted by their tails and thrown across the floor. In response, Mohair South Africa's spokesperson, Riaan Marais, says it would study the charge sheets, and Mohair SA's managing director, Deon Saayman, earlier said they launched their own investigation into the alleged abuse of animals on two Eastern Cape farms.

The fruit industry organisation, Hortgro, recognises and supports meaningful, sustainable and economically viable land reform in the agricultural sectors. This as a means to include previously disadvantaged agriculturists. The organisation's chairperson, Nicholas Dicey, said in a media statement it is vital that those individuals get an opportunity to fully participate in the economic growth of the industry. He says all custodians of agricultural land should strive to increase the value it offers to themselves, the agriculture workforce and the country as a whole. Land reform should therefore be implemented in such a way that it leads to viable and sustainable business.
