Varsity Cup approaches halfway mark─── ADRIAN BOTHA 09:02 Mon, 26 Feb 2018
The 2018 edition of the Varsity Cup approaches the halfway mark with round 5 of the competition to be contested on Monday.
The first game of the afternoon will be a top of the table clash with the log-leading Maties that travel to Johannesburg to face the 2nd placed Wits at the Wits Rugby Stadium from 16:45 on Monday afternoon.
The University of Cape Town Ikeys, who currently sit in 4th, welcome a struggling University of Pretoria Tuks side to the green mile in the Mother City at 18:30.
At the same time, Central South Africa gets its first chance to make a statement when the North West University Pukke travel to Port Elizabeth to face the NMU Madibaz who in their turn go in search of a result that will move them off the foot of the points table.
Round 5 concludes with what is expected to be a fiery fixture when a resurgent University of the Free State Shimlas welcome The University of Johannesburg to Shimla Park in Bloemfontein at 19:00.
The Shimlas are carrying a lot of confidence into the clash in Bloemfontein after consecutive wins against Wits and Ikeys.
Shimla captain Johan Kotze says, "for Shimlas, it is always a great honour playing at home in front of a great crowd who always backs us."
"They (UJ) play a bit more expansive rugby than the game we had against Ikeys and we will definitely have to be at our best if we will want to pull off a victory this coming Monday," the Captain added.
UJ, in their turn, are faced with a must-win match considering their recent run of form in the competition that includes only one victory in three games.
