Hunt reflects on life-changing spell with Cheetahs | News Article

Departing Toyota Cheetahs tighthead prop Robert Hunt is excited and ready for the next chapter in his rugby journey as he prepares to head to Wales – but he’ll fondly remember his time in Bloemfontein.

The 28-year-old spent just over a year with the Cheetahs and admits that while it was a brief stint, it was a life-changing one that reignited his passion for the game.

Hunt, who previously represented the Leopards and Bulls, made an immediate impact in the Free State. He quickly became a vital member of the squad. Alongside loosehead prop Cameron Dawson and hooker Vernon Paulo, the trio became affectionately known as the “bomb squad” – a front-row combination that gelled brilliantly on the field.

The next chapter in the Hermanus-born player’s career will take him to Newport, where he’ll be turning out for the Dragons in the United Rugby Championship for at least the next two years.

Speaking to OFM Sport, Hunt said that although his time with the Cheetahs was short-lived, it was a period that rekindled his love for rugby. He admits that, had it not been for his spell in Bloemfontein, he may have stepped away from the sport altogether.

“To sum it up in one phrase – the Cheetahs absolutely reignited my passion for rugby,” Hunt said.

“I’m really, really grateful for the opportunity I had to play there. It gave me a fresh perspective on the game and on my career. Honestly, I was at a bit of a crossroads. I wasn’t sure if, or for how much longer, I wanted to keep playing under the circumstances I was facing.

“I think it’s fair to say that everything changed when I found myself in the right environment, with coaches and teammates who welcomed me and gave me the space to focus purely on my game. That meant the world to me. I thoroughly enjoyed it – great people all round. I truly wish them all the best for the upcoming season.

“I know they’re in great hands. I’ve got full confidence in Rory (Duncan), Frans (Steyn), Piney (Ruan Pienaar) and everyone else working hard towards their goals. I really hope they achieve them.”

While the powerful, mobile tighthead is excited at the prospect of playing overseas and facing the challenges that come with it, he says if he were to return to South Africa, the Free State would be his first choice.

“If I ever find myself heading back to South Africa, I’ll definitely be looking at the Free State first,” Hunt added.

“That’s where I enjoyed my rugby the most – and the people too. Hopefully, the union can find a proper competition to play in consistently and build themselves up again to the Cheetahs we all used to know and respect.

“I’d definitely love to sneak in the back door and be part of it again. But for now, like I said, I’m heading overseas and I’m going to give it my all. If I end up staying longer than two years, that would be great – we’ll take it as it comes.”

Following the conclusion of the SA Cup, coach Frans Steyn also told OFM Sport that he hopes to see Hunt back in a Cheetahs jersey one day – describing him as exactly the kind of person the proud union needs.
