The Bloemfontein-based Premier Soccer League club Siwelele FC wrote another piece of their own history on Wednesday night by claiming the club’s first-ever win on the road.

Siwelele secured back-to-back victories in the PSL with a 2-0 triumph over the struggling Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium in the southern suburbs of Cape Town, lifting themselves to 10th on the log after battling for consistency in the league so far.

As for Stellies, this marks a third successive defeat across all competitions, leaving them rooted in 15th place on the table with just nine points from their opening 12 league fixtures.

The visitors from Bloemfontein made their intentions clear early on when Siviwe Magidigidi produced some brilliant work down the left flank, hurdling a challenge before delivering a low cross that was coolly slotted home by Tebogo Potsane in just the third minute.

Siwelele nearly doubled their advantage just after the half-hour mark when Grant Margeman unleashed a powerful long-range effort that forced a sharp save from Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens to keep his side in the contest.

The Free Staters took a deserved 1-0 lead into the half-time break.

Four minutes into the second stanza, Siwelele did manage to extend their lead when Magidigidi found the back of the net. This time, it was Potsane who turned provider, slipping through a superb pass that Magidigidi latched onto before rounding Stephens and calmly slotting into the unguarded net.

With 13 minutes of regulation time remaining, Siwelele could have made it 3-0 when Margeman picked out Chibuike Ohizu in the box, but the substitute striker was denied once more by Stephens.

The visitors managed to hold firm to their two-goal advantage despite relentless late pressure from a desperate Stellies attack.

With three priceless points secured, Siwelele leave the Mother City smiling.

Meanwhile, over in Durban, it was heartbreak for the other Bloemfontein outfit, Marumo Gallants, as a 77th-minute strike by Haashim Domingo handed Durban City a 1-0 win at the Chatsworth Stadium. For Marumo, it marked back-to-back league defeats in Durban, following a 4-0 drubbing by Lamontville Golden Arrows at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday.

This latest defeat has led to Marumo slipping down to 12th on the log, something that they will want to rectify later in the month when they host the 4th-placed Sekhukhune United in their next home fixture.

This coming Sunday, Marumo will be desperate to bounce back in emphatic fashion when they return to the King Zwelithini Stadium to face the same Golden Arrows in the semi-finals of the 2025 Carling Knockout Cup. Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00.
