The former Junior Springbok flanker, Ruan Steenkamp, has reported for duty at the Tafel Lager Griquas and took part in his first training session at the team on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old former Bulls captain has joined the Peacock Blues as part of the deal which saw the exciting outside back, James Verity-Amm, head to Loftus Versfeld.

Steenkamp has not played any rugby since the lockdown started more than a year ago and he's itching to get playing again.

Steenkamp told OFM Sport that he wants to add value to his new team.

“Luckily I know a lot of the guys from playing with and against them. I'm really excited about playing for the Griquas.

“I was at the Bulls for nine years and I was also at Edinburgh as a World Cup joker.

“Along the way, I've learnt a lot of things, so I really hope that I can benefit the Griquas and have an input.”

The Griquas coach, Scott Mathie, told OFM Sport that they saw a need to secure the services of a player such as Steenkamp.

“We saw a massive need for leadership in our team and for someone to come in there in the back row. Stoney is a no-nonsense and uncompromising flanker who is great in the contact and carries the ball well.

“He has leadership ability and was the captain of the Bulls in the SuperRugby a few years back.

“For us, it was just a good acquisition.”

There are some suggestions that Steenkamp will take over the captaincy at the Griquas.
