Didiza satisfied with arrest of auctioneer allegedly spreading FMD | News Article

The Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza, has welcomed the arrest of an auctioneer from Polokwane who allegedly on purpose spread the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Limpopo.

Didiza says the arrest is vital as the recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth is having a devastating effect on the country's economy, but more specific on the red meat industry. Her response comes after an auctioneer, Sors Snyman, was arrested for the alleged contravention of the Animal Diseases Act of 1984 after he knowingly bought cloven-hoofed animals in the Molemole district, moved the animals out of this FMD controlled areas and sold the animals at various auctions at Mogwadi and Vivo.

Didiza has also applauded police for their swift response after the department opened a case following the suspicious spread of the disease. Snyman appeared in court on Monday and was released on R10 000 bail. He will be back in court on May 23.

Didiza also urges people who may be concerned that they bought cattle from Snyman, or through any suspicious transaction, to contact the department’s Law Enforcement Unit or their local state veterinary services.

She also assures all South Africans that all roleplayers are doing everything possible to ensure the disease is dealt with.

Jan Nel from the department’s Law  Enforcement Unit can be contacted at 084-6773157.
