This week on Touchdown we’re focusing on the state of long distance running in South Africa.
For many of us that absolutely love that feeling when rubber meets the road, we were incredibly excited to hear that the 2022 edition of the iconic Comrades Marathon will be taking place on Sunday, 28 August.
More recently, we saw the Cape Town Marathon opening doors to more long distance running events being hosted in South Africa after the last year-and-a-half, where no races took place because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to Comrades Marathon legend, Nick Bester, South African athletes are trying their best but at the moment they are not competing with the best in the world. He also explains why the club system is so important to growing the sport in the country.
The 50km world record holder, Irvette van Zyl, says that the state of women's long distance running is definitely looking good.
Pakiso Mthembu, who was named the 2019 Kovsies sportman of the year and is just 22 years old, states that training camps are essential to good performance and we could possibly see him at the Olympic games in 2024.
